Left the
house Thursday morning a half hour late but that was ok because I’d
given myself a big window of travel time. Arrived at the airport
w/plenty of time (it’s 2 hours away). The flight down went w/o a
hitch.
After arriving at the hotel and freshening up a bit,
I made my way to the theater. I got extremely lucky with parking. I
found a spot across from one of the mall entrances. There are three
levels to the mall and as luck would have it I’d parked at just the
right level. The entrance led right to the food court where everyone
was meeting up at. I wandered around for a while and not really
knowing who I was looking for.
I ended up getting found by
Kay and her friend Stuart from San Diego. I’d had my flyer in my
hand and they recognized me from that. We stood and chatted for a
while. They’d had a time of it getting to L.A., traffic had been
horrible. We staked out a few tables so that others could join us
when they came. Stuart held the table while Kay and I went to grab
some food. By the time we got back to the table, a small group had
joined us. We chatted it up over food.
Soon a line was
forming out side the theater which was just across the way from the
food court. There were maybe 20 people in line so we thought it was
a good time to mosey on over. Stuart had been trying to get a hold
of another friend on his cell phone who was coming to the film. His
friend had already found the line as we were getting into it. While
waiting in line, I met Constance, who was kind enough to take photos
of myself with David and Kate a little later. Thank you Constance!
:D *hugs*
David, Jane, and the gang arrived shortly after 6
pm. It seemed they had ‘snuck’ in from the back door of the theater.
(edit: bloodylovecraft told me later that David and gang came in
from the food court entrance. I missed that completely and assumed
they'd come in the back way somehow.) My first glimpse of them
was from the theater entrance from where we were standing in line.
David made his way from the start of the line and greeted everyone.
I couldn’t think of anything intelligent to say as he passed by
except to say hi and smile. I watched and listened as he chatted
with the guests in front and behind us in line and took several
pictures. He was very personable and attentive to each person he
spoke with. I was kicking myself for not thinking of anything
intelligent to say, but my brain had turned to mush.
*argh!*
A few people had brought things for David
to sign. One person had a poster, someone else had some artwork
they’d made; another person had a magazine and someone else had
their Atlantis Season One Box Set cover. Sometime during all of this
I spied Kate who was chatting with Jane just a few feet away. Kate
was wearing her hair strait so I didn’t quite recognize her at
first.
Then it was time to go into the theater.
Jane had each guest’s name on a list and we checked in with her as
we entered the theater. Jen (known as Jen the fan girl online) was
giving David the squirrel she’d brought especially for the
occasion.
As Jen was presenting David with King of
the Rodents, it occurred to me to ask David if I could have my
picture taken with him. I mean, I was practically standing
right next to him and I would smack myself later if I didn’t ask
him. I’m terribly shy at these kinds of things but I managed to work
up the courage and ask. He was happy to, of course. ;)
It took a while for everyone to get in
and find a seat. I’m not quite sure how many people were there but
I’d guess about 150-200. I’m terrible at judging things like this so
don’t quote me on that! ;) I grabbed a seat about eight rows from
the front where I met Jen and her friend Jenilee (sorry if I’ve
misspelled your name! *blush*). We chatted about Dr. Who and
Torchwood, Stargate, and fandom in general.
Pretty soon the
lights dimmed and the camera began rolling. At this point I suppose
I could spoil you with plot details but that would ruin it for you.
I know this might be hard because you really might want to know all
of the details anyway, but you really have to *see* the film to get
the comedy. Suffice it to say everyone in the theater was laughing
hysterically through out the entire film! I also must say that no
one else does a girlish scream better than David! ;)
Everyone
applauded as the credits rolled and we recognized many people's
names. I’m always amused by the disclaimer that says “the events and
character portrayed in this film are fictional…” blah, blah, blah –
I’m amused by this because if the events in ADB portrayed in any way
events in real life, it would be frightening! :D
Next was the
Q & A, which was cut shorter than anticipated because 1) the
film started late and 2) we had to be out of the theater by a
certain time. My brain is really fuzzy on the particulars of the Q
& A at this point. I was busy taking more pictures. You would
think as a musician I would be good at multi-tasking – apparently
I’m not ;p, sorry.
I do remember one of the cast/crew (I
think it was David, but I can’t quite remember) telling about the
scene in the mud w/o a stitch of clothes on and how they were
heating the ground because it was absolutely freezing that day.
David said they began filming on Friday, Jan. 13, because what
better day to start filming than on Friday the 13th! Someone asked
if there would be a sequel. The answer wasn’t really definitive
either way. Hmmm… it does have potential to have a sequel, so… maybe
someday. *crosses fingers!*
They had to be out of the house
that they filmed at by the last day of the month so that it could be
repainted for the new tenants who were moving in the first part of
February. I think this last tid bit I overheard from Jane while we
were making our way out of the theater.
After the Q & A, we began to
congregate just outside the theater on the mall promenade. David was
gracious to spend more time chatting amongst us and signing and
posing for more pictures. Andrew Miller (who co-starred with David
in Nothing) was there. I saw an older gentleman who had a remarkable
resemblance to David; I thought it might be his father. I don’t know
if it was coincidence or not and I didn’t want to be nosy, so – it
shall remain a mystery. ;) There were some kids there that David
seemed to know. It was fun to watch him interact with the
youngsters. You can tell he loves kids (unlike McKay! ;)
I
was able to get Kate’s auto. Again, I couldn’t think of anything
intelligent to say but I thanked her for coming and signing for me.
I also managed to ask if I could have her picture taken with me
which she was gracious to do.
Someone asked if I could snap a picture
of them with David, which I was happy to do. It was at this point
that Jane started hinting that they had to leave soon. I didn’t have
his auto yet and I was standing with in reaching distance of him so
I literally handed him my flyer to sign. I think he managed to sign
just a few more after that before Jane pulled him away.
And that was my evening at the L. A.
screening of A Dog’s Breakfast!! :D It was a fantastic evening that
was far too short! It was very special to have been a part of the
first screening. I hope that eventually the film makes its way out
into the big wide world for everyone to see. :)
